Struggling to get that perfect, silky crema on your espresso shots?
I totally feel your pain. After countless mornings experimenting with espresso setups, I decided to seriously test something that was getting plenty of chatter lately—combining puck screens with paper filters. Sounds fiddly, right? Well, the results might surprise you.
Crema is that golden layer on top of a fresh espresso that we all chase after. You know, that rich foam that you want to swirl around and savour. But it can sometimes vanish as quickly as it appears—leaving your coffee experience feeling incomplete. So, let's quickly talk about why crema matters. Crema packs aroma, flavour, and just feels lovely on the tongue. If it's consistently thin or patchy, there's something not quite right in your espresso prep.

So let's get to the good part—the actual layering. It's simpler than it sounds, I promise! Here's my exact method:
Grind and Distribute: After weighing your dose, grind your coffee directly into the basket. Give it a bit of a stir with your distribution tool to get a level surface.
Add your Paper Filter: Pop a single espresso paper filter directly on top of your coffee grounds. Make sure it's nicely centred, no upward curls—flatness matters!
Tamp it Evenly: Once you're happy, take a self-leveling tamper (or your preferred model) and give it a steady, even press. Don't over-tamp—just get it firm and level.
Position Your Puck Screen: Drop a clean puck screen on top of the paper filter. Easy as that. It's acting like an additional diffuser, helping to evenly spread the water flow during extraction.
There you go! It's probably quicker to actually do than to read through the steps. At first, I was sceptical—two layers sounds unnecessary, right? But having tried this method personally, my crema has become noticeably more consistent, richer, and lasts longer.
I've noticed less channeling too—when your espresso water finds an easier route through the puck. Less channeling = better extraction.
